This part of the learning process focuses on the field learning through actual participation in field workshops, shadowing, research, observation etc to experience the concepts in a live field situation.

The Experiential Learning Pedagogy

Experiential learning is defined as the process of making meaning from direct experience. It has been popularized by David A Kolb and inspiration has been drawn from the works of John Dewey and Jean Piaget.

Other synonymous words used are action learning, adventure learning, free choice learning and cooperative learning. Experiential learning is focused on the ‘Individual learning’ where one makes discoveries and experiments with knowledge first hand and thus gains ‘learning insights’ to hone, reinforce, refresh or upgrade knowledge and skills.

Learner requirements

Experiential learning requires the learner to :
- be actively involved in the experience
- reflect and pace the learning process and thus make it more enjoyable
- possess and use analytical and cognitive skills to conceptualize and derive insights from the experience
- possess decision making and problem solving skills to use the ideas gained from the experience
